🧠 β€” yesterday was better.

Hi, I'm John and this is "The CEO's Brainpan" β€” my candid musings on leading a distributed-first, venture-backed startup, YEN.io. Subscribe [ brain.みんγͺ ], , and then chill yo.

some days are better than others.

I had this quick chat with a friend one morning β€” it nicely frames, generally, my current state-of-mind-ish-ness:

Good friends like marty make the difference.

An old post that I wrote nearly 6 years ago captures this sentiment really well:

I do not like the fact that I can wake up one morning and feel as
if the world was created uniquely for me as if I am the very center
of the universe and that everything was in lockstep with how I perceive
the world to be (and how I desire it to be) and then the very next morning
feel exactly the opposite as if I was created to be the antithesis of
all created things.

When you commit yourself to building a company you commit yourself to an ass-kicking the likes of which you've never experienced.

You see, one doesn't really think about these types of things in the moment, mostly because we're too high on our own ideas and the feelings of self-importance to even remember the last time that we did this and nearly died. Oh, and the fact that I'm still recovering from an insane summer...

... but you know why I haven't driven myself off a bridge? It's because I have folks like you in my life β€” folks like Marty, who ask me how I'm really doing and have created a safe place for me to share my anxieties, my insecurities, and all my ugliness without reprisal or the real fear of being rejected.

Do you lead an organization? Did you start a company? Do you lead a team? Do you do anything with other human beings? Then, you need real, authentic, healthy community. No, not the superficial "social drinking buddies" β€” I'm talking about the folks in your life that'll shoot you straight, lean in hard, but love you all the way while they are pissing in your drink (and you in theirs).

Treat them well. Treat them rightly. Even and especially when it's hard... because you'll need them when it's your turn β€” and it's coming up faster than you can possibly imagine.

In fact, it's already here. Buckle the fuck up.

To infinity and bitcoin.
