Applying to YC...

... again... and again... and again.

Hey friends.

It’s that time of the year again where thousands of startups get their applications in for one of the more well-known startup accelerators on the planet, YCombinator. They are doing another “Remote Batch” which will allow them to field even more applicants and thereby increasing the difficulty of acceptance.

But, you and I don’t apply because we necessarily want to get an invite to interview… you and I apply because it’s just a good idea.

Actually, as you’ve heard me say before, walking through their application is an incredibly-powerful and clarifying exercise that helps you refine your pitch to a very, very fine point.

And that’s the reason that I apply, every batch, because the questions that we have to answer force us to “boil it down” into the fundamental parts — a very difficult challenge for a lot Founder / CEOs who are often much more “visionary” with their pitches than practical.

The dark secret, though, is that we have to be both, at the same time. We have to know how to cast vision while also being able to talk the intimate practicalities of how to operate the business and deploy product. We have to be able to see into the distant future while also making sure we don’t stand on any landmines today (or send our team into a death trap).

Hard but necessary work.

I hope you apply and walk through the process, even and especially if you don’t care about getting into the program. You’ll be glad you did.

Love you all,
